Privacy notice

Version 2026-10

This notice explains what information One Guyana Direct collects when you use the app or the website, why, who sees it, how long we keep it, and what you can ask us to do with it.

You can listen, watch and read without an account and without giving us your name, email or phone number.

Who we are

One Guyana Direct, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown, Guyana, is responsible for the personal information described here. For any privacy question or request, email support@oneguyanadirect.com.

What we collect, and why

When you open the app

The app registers your phone with us so it can send you the notifications you choose and keep your settings. We store:

  • a random code that identifies the app on your phone (not your phone number or your phone's serial number)
  • whether it is an Android phone or an iPhone, the app version, your language setting and your time zone
  • the region of Guyana or the overseas city you choose, if you choose one
  • a notification token from Apple or Google, if you allow notifications, and the notification topics you pick
  • whether you opened a notification we sent, so we can count how many people it reached

The app does not ask for your location. Weather and regional news follow the region you pick.

When you sign in

You only need to sign in to send messages, vote in polls, save favourites, set reminders or keep your place in a programme. To sign in you give us an email address or a phone number, and we send you a one-time code to confirm it. You can also add a name. We store:

  • your email address or phone number, and when you confirmed it
  • your name, if you give one, and your region
  • your favourites, reminders and how far you got through each programme

When you send us something

You can send a question, a message, a voice note (up to 2 minutes), a photo or a video, from the app or the website. We store:

  • what you send, and the programme or live event it is for
  • the name you want read out, if any, and whether you are writing from outside Guyana
  • your region, if you chose one
  • the permissions you give for its use (see the next section)
  • what our staff decided about it and any reply we published

Every message is checked by our staff before anything is used on air or published. Uploads are checked for viruses.

When you vote in a poll, we record one vote per phone or account so each person is counted once. Poll results are only shown as totals.

When you use the website

  • Visitor statistics. We count page views, the pages people read, which website sent them, the type of device (phone, tablet or computer), and file downloads and links people follow to other websites. We do not use tracking cookies or outside analytics services, and we do not store your IP address. To count unique visitors, we turn the day's date, your IP address and your browser type into a scrambled code that cannot be turned back and changes every day.
  • Cookies. The website sets two cookies that it needs to work securely. Both last two hours. If you send a question from the website, it also sets a cookie that lasts one year, so you can come back and see what happened to your question.
  • Launch updates. If you ask to be told when the app launches, we keep your email address and send you that message.

Your permissions

We never put your name, voice, photo, video or words on air or online without your permission. When you send something, you choose separately whether we may:

  • read your name on air
  • play your voice on air
  • show your photo
  • show your video
  • publish your words

Sending us news and updates is a separate choice, and saying no does not affect anything else.

We keep a record of each permission, the date you gave it and the version of this notice that applied, so we can show we had your permission. You can withdraw a permission at any time by emailing support@oneguyanadirect.com. Something already broadcast cannot be taken back, but we will not use it again.

Who can see your information

Only staff who need it for their job can see it, and every staff account uses a password and a second sign-in step. Staff decisions on the messages you send are recorded, with who made them and when.

We do not sell your information, we do not show advertising, and we do not share your information with advertisers.

We use these companies to run the service. They handle information only to provide their service to us:

  • Cloud hosting stores the app's data, uploads and website.
  • Google Firebase Cloud Messaging and Apple Push Notification service deliver notifications to your phone.
  • Mailgun sends sign-in codes and other emails.
  • A text-message provider sends sign-in codes by SMS.
  • Cloudflare delivers the website and protects it from attacks.
  • Our streaming provider delivers the live radio stream. Like any internet service, it sees your IP address while you listen.
  • YouTube plays our videos. When you press play on a YouTube video, YouTube receives information about your device under Google's own privacy policy. On the website we use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, which does not set YouTube cookies until you play a video.

Some of these services keep data on servers outside Guyana, including in the United States.

We will give information to the police or a court only when the law requires us to.

How long we keep it

  • Voice notes, photos and videos you send: deleted one year after you send them. The written text, our staff's decision and the record of your permissions are kept as a record.
  • Your account: until you delete it.
  • Your copy of your data: the download link works for 7 days, then the file is deleted.
  • Website visitor statistics: 13 months.
  • Listener counts for the live stream: about 13 months. These are totals only and identify no one.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account in the app (More, then Privacy and data), or on our website at oneguyanadirect.gov.gy/delete-account, which emails you a link to confirm. If you signed in with a phone number, you can also email support@oneguyanadirect.com, and we will check the request is yours before deleting anything. When you delete your account:

  • We delete your email address or phone number, your name, your favourites, your reminders, your listening progress and any copy of your data we prepared.
  • Your permission to read your name on air, and to send you news and updates, is withdrawn.
  • Messages, voice notes, photos and videos you already sent stay with us, without your name or any link to you, until the one-year limit above. This is so a programme that has already used them, or plans to, is not left with gaps. Any permission you gave to play your voice or show your photo or video stays as you gave it.

If you do not want something you sent to be used at all, tell us before you delete your account, or email us afterwards and describe it, and we will stop using it.

Your rights

Under Guyana's data protection law you can ask us to:

  • give you a copy of the information we hold about you (you can download it yourself in the app)
  • correct it (you can change your name, email, phone number and region yourself in the app)
  • delete it, as described above
  • stop using it for a purpose, including withdrawing any permission

Email support@oneguyanadirect.com. We may ask you to confirm the request from the email address or phone number on your account, so that no one else can ask for your information. We will reply within one month. If you are not happy with our answer, you can complain to the authority responsible for data protection in Guyana.

Children

Anyone can listen. To send messages, voice notes, photos or videos, you should be 13 or older. If you are younger, ask a parent or guardian first. If a parent tells us their child has sent us something, we will delete it.

Keeping your information safe

All information travels between your phone and our servers encrypted. Your sign-in details are kept in your phone's secure storage. Uploads are stored privately and only staff can open them. We check our systems for security problems and fix them.

Changes to this notice

The version number at the top of this page changes whenever we change this notice. If a change affects how we use what you have already sent us, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
